Short answer

Amboseli has three road gates: Meshanani on the Namanga side in the north-west, Iremito on the Emali side in the north-east and Kimana in the east, plus the Amboseli airstrip (HKAM) near the centre. The lodges inside the park and the KWS houses stand in the central zone around Ol Tukai, between the Enkongo Narok and Longinye swamps, with Observation Hill just to the west. There is no fuel inside, so fill up in Emali, Kimana or Namanga.

KWS publishes park information, gate details and a fact-file brochure on its Amboseli page, and its management plan for 2020 to 2030 carries zoning and conservancy maps. The map on this page and the coordinates below come from OpenStreetMap, checked on 4 October 2026.

Key coordinates

Save these before you go. Mobile coverage inside the park is patchy at best, and a set of waypoints in an offline app will get you out of trouble faster than anything else.

Finding your way around Amboseli

Amboseli has three road gates. Meshanani, in the north-west, takes the gravel road from Namanga (the B54 on OpenStreetMap, the C103 in KWS's plan). Iremito, in the north-east, is reached from Emali on the Mombasa Road by the tarmac C102 and then 21 km of gravel on the E397, which KWS calls the park's busiest access road. Kimana, in the east, is 27 km by road from Kimana town and links to Tsavo West. From the gates to the airstrip near Ol Tukai is 11.8 km from Iremito, 18.5 km from Kimana and 21.5 km from Meshanani.

Inside, 214 km of roads cover a small park, and the speed limit of 40 km/h makes every distance longer than it looks; KWS has planned earth bumps on the long straights to slow drivers down. Off-road driving is prohibited. In wet years floods can close viewing roads and even the airstrip, as they did in December 2019, so ask at the gate which circuits are open.

Names you will see on other maps but not on the ground

  • There is no 'Namanga Gate' and no 'Kulunyiet Gate'. From Namanga you enter at Meshanani. Ol Kelunyiet is the area beside Kimana Gate, which an old KWS page called 'Kimana (Olkelunyiet) Gate'.
  • The park airstrip is Amboseli (HKAM). Kimana airstrip is a separate strip near Kimana town, in the Kimana Sanctuary outside the park, even though KWS's own park page mixes the two up.
  • 'Ol Okenya swamp' is not a KWS name. KWS names Enkongo Narok, Longinye and Ol Tukai Orok.
  • Kitirua, on the south-western side, is not a standard gate: KWS's plan describes a steel pipe barrier there and lists building a gate as a future action.

Practical points

  • Prepay your fees on KWSPay and keep the e-ticket both on your phone and on paper.
  • Fill up in Emali, Kimana or Namanga. There is no fuel inside the park.
  • Kenya renumbered its roads: Nairobi to Namanga is now the A2 (once the A104) and the Mombasa Road the A8 (once the A109).
  • Stay in your vehicle except at designated areas; Observation Hill is the one place you may walk.
  • Drones need a KCAA licence and cost $300 per day in park fees.
