The gateway town on the east side

Kimana before Amboseli: fuel, cash, the gate, the drive (2026)

Kimana is a trading centre on the Emali to Loitokitok road, the last town before Amboseli's eastern gate and the first one you reach coming from Tsavo West. It has fuel and a market, and most of the camps sold as Amboseli are strung along the road between the town and the gate.

If you only want the answer

Kimana sits on the C102 about 27 km by road from Amboseli's Kimana Gate, 30 to 45 minutes. Fill up there (a Shell station and one other), but do not count on cash: no bank or ATM is confirmed in Kimana, so draw shillings at KCB in Emali or in Loitokitok, 16 km south. The park is cashless, so buy your KWS ticket on KWSPay before you arrive, and reach the gate between 06:00 and 18:00.

Fuel, shops and cash in Kimana

Fuel is the reason to stop. OpenStreetMap shows a Shell station with a shop in Kimana and a second, unnamed fuel station, and there is no fuel anywhere between the park gates, so fill the tank here before you drive in. KWS's own list of things to bring includes reserve fuel. Inside the park the limit is 40 km/h and the circuits round the swamps add up, so leave with more than you think you need.

Shopping is basic. The Shell shop and a marketplace are the only outlets mapped, with no supermarket, so buy specialist food, camping gas and anything branded in Nairobi or in Emali, where Mulley's Supermarket is mapped. Mapping in rural Kajiado is patchy, so smaller shops may well exist; just do not plan a camping trip around them.

Cash is the weak point. KCB's own branch list has no Kimana branch and no bank or ATM is mapped in the town. The nearest branches confirmed by a bank's own list are KCB Loitokitok, 16 km south, and KCB Emali, 86 km north on the Mombasa highway, both open Monday to Friday 08:30 to 16:00 and Saturday 08:30 to 12:00. Carry shillings from there for fuel, market purchases, tips and the curio sellers KWS and the county have set up in containers at the gates.

Kimana Gate: hours, tickets and the drive in

KWS tells drivers to turn off at the Kimana shopping centre and follow the signs to the gate. It is about 27 km: 4.9 km on the C102, then about 22 km on the B54, which OpenStreetMap marks as asphalt for most of the way. Travellers report the road sealed, while the 2020 KWS management plan still described it as gravel to be upgraded, so treat the tarmac as likely. Kimana is one of the park's three busiest road gates, with Meshanani and Iremito, and the management plan mentions an old Kimana gate to be turned into an education centre, so older maps may put it in a slightly different spot. Old KWS pages also call it "Kimana (Olkelunyiet) Gate", after the Ol Kelunyiet area around it.

The gate opens at 06:00 and closes at 18:00, unless you are staying overnight inside (KWS park page, 2026). Pay before you arrive: the conservation fee is $90 per non-resident adult for a single entry of up to 24 hours, plus KSh 600 a day for a car with fewer than six seats (October 2025 KWS card), all through KWSPay at kwspay.ecitizen.go.ke. KWS names M-Pesa, Visa and bank transfer as the ways to pay, and does not say whether the gate can sell a ticket on the spot. Press reports since late 2025 describe a processing charge of 5 or 8.5 per cent on top, which KWS does not mention, so expect one.

From the gate it is 18.5 km on park roads to the Amboseli airstrip and the Ol Tukai lodges, 30 to 45 minutes at the speed limit. KWS's brochure places the Lemong'o museum in the Noonkotiak area 6 km from Kimana Gate.

Kimana Sanctuary and the corridor to the park

Kimana Community Wildlife Sanctuary lies on the former Kimana group ranch east of the park, with its main gate about 7 km from Kimana town. The KWS ecosystem plan places it in the Kimana-Kilimanjaro corridor. Big Life Foundation describes the Kimana Corridor between the park and the sanctuary as a strip just 46 metres wide at its narrowest point, used by more than 85,000 wild animals since it was set aside (June 2025), with a solar-powered crop-protection fence along it. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants has tracked young bulls moving between the sanctuary and Tsavo East.

For visitors the sanctuary means three things. Angama Amboseli, all-inclusive at $1,850 per person a night in 2026, stands inside it and charges a Kimana Conservation Levy of $60 per adult a night on top (2025 rates page). The Kimana airstrip, which Safarilink serves on its morning flight for $247 one way, is here too and should not be confused with the park's own Amboseli strip. And balloons fly over this side of the ecosystem: one operator held a 2024 licence based partly at Kimana Sanctuary, and Kilimanjaro Balloon Safaris launches from its camp just outside Kimana Gate at $450 per international adult (rates page, October 2025). The sanctuary's own website now redirects elsewhere, so its campsites could not be checked.

Where to sleep near Kimana Gate

Most of the beds marketed as Amboseli are here, on community land just outside the eastern boundary. Several of these camps describe themselves as being in the park; on their own distance statements none of them is. Sleeping outside has one advantage: you pay no conservation fee for the arrival evening, and you can be at the gate when it opens at 06:00. The full list, with rates and ownership, is in our lodge guide.

Namanga: the border town for Meshanani Gate

Namanga is the border town on the A2 Nairobi to Arusha road, about 165 km from Nairobi, with a joint one-stop border post into Tanzania. From here a gravel road runs 49 to 51 km east to Meshanani Gate, 1 to 1.5 hours; the 75 km often quoted is roughly the distance to Ol Tukai in the middle of the park. There is no Namanga Gate: from this side you enter at Meshanani.

Namanga is better supplied than Kimana. OpenStreetMap shows several fuel stations, among them Shell, Gulf Energy and Kenol Kobil, an Equity Bank branch with a second bank and an ATM, the Zamzam supermarket and a hospital. KCB has no branch here; its nearest is in Kajiado town, about 84 km north. This guide found no Namanga hotel with a working website, so if you need a bed on the border, book through a source you trust.

Emali and Loitokitok: banks, fuel and the hospital

Emali, on the Mombasa highway about 128 km from Nairobi, is where the Iremito route leaves the A8, and it is the best-stocked stop on the way: KCB next to Kindu Mall, with Co-op Bank, Postbank, Sidian Bank and KWFT branches also mapped, Shell, Total, Rubis and Blay fuel stations, and Mulley's Supermarket. Iremito Gate is 80 km on, the last 21 km on gravel. Ol Tukai Lodge sells train packages that use Emali's station on the Madaraka Express line.

Loitokitok, the sub-county headquarters 16 km south of Kimana on the Kilimanjaro foothills, is where you go for a bank or a doctor. KCB's branch stands on the main road opposite the open-air market, and an ATM, a fuel station and a police station are mapped. Loitokitok Hospital, a public sub-county hospital, is about 33 km from Kimana Gate and 51 km from the park airstrip. Our health page covers what to do in an emergency.

What to buy before Kimana Gate

There are no shops or fuel inside Amboseli, and the single KWS public campsite near the park office offers water, a toilet block and a kitchen area. All KWS parks ban single-use plastic, so bring refillable containers rather than bottled-water crates.

  • A full tank, filled in Kimana, Emali or Namanga
  • Shillings from KCB in Emali or Loitokitok, since Kimana has no confirmed ATM
  • Your KWSPay e-tickets for entry, vehicle and camping, paid while you still have signal
  • The passport you used on the KWSPay booking
  • Drinking water in refillable containers
  • Food for every day inside, plus a spare day in case of a breakdown
  • A buff or dust mask and covers for cameras: Amboseli's name comes from the Maa for salty dust
