The Kenya question

Amboseli or Tsavo: which Kenyan park should you choose?

Amboseli and Tsavo share a border region, a road and a KWS combination ticket, and very little else. One is a small park of swamps where you watch known elephants against Kilimanjaro; the other is two enormous parks of red earth, lava and space. Our network runs independent guides to both, so this comparison has no side to sell.

If you only want the answer

Choose Amboseli if you want elephants close up with Kilimanjaro behind them in two or three days: it is 392 km², about 4 to 5 hours from Nairobi, and costs $90 per non-resident adult per 24 hours (October 2025 KWS card). Choose Tsavo if you want space, red elephants, Mzima Springs and the train: Tsavo East and Tsavo West cover about 22,000 km² and cost $80 per park per day. With five nights or more, do both: Kimana Gate to Tsavo West's Chyulu Gate is 74 km, and KWS sells Tsavo West plus Amboseli for $150 instead of $170.

Compare all of Kenya's parks on the comparison page. The article below goes into the detail.

Two very different parks, one road between them

People weigh these two against each other because they sit next to each other on the map south-east of Nairobi, with the Chyulu Hills between them and a road linking Amboseli's Kimana Gate to Tsavo West. KWS treats them as a set: its October 2025 card sells a Tsavo West and Amboseli package and a three-park package that adds Tsavo East. Elephants treat them as a set too, with young bulls collared in Amboseli turning up between Kimana Sanctuary and Tsavo East.

On the ground they could hardly be less alike. Amboseli is small, flat and built around spring-fed swamps, so the animals come to you and the mountain does the rest. Tsavo is two parks of about 22,000 km² together, where the reward is distance, solitude and landscapes Amboseli does not have. The table puts the two side by side, and the rest of the page explains the rows that decide trips.

Fees from the KWS Conservation Fees card of October 2025, still current on 4 October 2026. Amboseli elephants from the Amboseli Trust for Elephants' 2025 report; visitor numbers from the KNBS Economic Survey 2026. Tsavo figures from the Tsavo Kenya guide's pages, which work from the same KWS card.

What each park costs: $90 against $80

Amboseli is the dearer ticket. Under the October 2025 card a non-resident adult pays $90 per single entry of up to 24 hours, the highest KWS rate, shared only with Lake Nakuru; Tsavo East and Tsavo West charge $80 each. The rates are flat all year in both. Vehicles under six seats pay KSh 600 a day in either, about $4.60.

Size changes the sum. Amboseli is small enough to see well in two days, so two days cost a non-resident adult $180. Doing Tsavo properly means two days in each half, $320, because a day in Tsavo East buys nothing at a Tsavo West gate. If your trip takes in both, the packages help: Tsavo West plus Amboseli is $150 against $170 bought separately, and all three parks $215 against $250. KWS sells them only for a continuous stay with every park paid at once, and the ticket has to be shown at each gate. The full Tsavo card is on the Tsavo entry fees page.

Beds tilt the same way. In Amboseli the cheapest roof is a KWS cottage at $110 for two (2025 rate card), Ol Tukai, the lodge inside with the clearest published rate, starts at $190 per person full board in April and May 2026, Sungura Safari Camp outside Kimana Gate charges $320 per twin tent, and Elewana Tortilis on the western edge starts at $317 per person. Tsavo's cheapest lodges with published rates are Voi Wildlife Lodge from $95 per person full board in the green season and Ashnil Aruba inside Tsavo East from $100. Camping follows suit: $30 per adult at Amboseli's KWS campsite, $20 at Tsavo's.

Wildlife: Kilimanjaro's elephants against Tsavo's space

Amboseli's case rests on elephants and the view behind them. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants counted 2,065 known living elephants at the end of 2025, in 67 families, every one followed individually by a research project running since 1972, and in the dry months they gather on the Enkongo Narok and Longinye swamps within sight of the roads. Kilimanjaro rises behind them from Tanzania, clearest early in the morning and most often in August to October. Lions are likely on a short stay and cheetah a reasonable chance; leopard is luck.

Tsavo answers with scale. The 2011 aerial count found 12,573 elephants across the Tsavo and Mkomazi ecosystem, coloured terracotta by the laterite they spray over themselves, and Mudanda Rock lets you look down on them at the water. Tsavo West adds Mzima Springs, with its underwater chamber, though its hippos fell from about seventy to five in the 2009 drought and no count has been published since. Tsavo also carries the dry-country browsers Amboseli is thin on, lesser kudu, gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx, while its lions are thinly spread and harder to find.

For birds Tsavo West leads with more than 600 species, against more than 400 in Amboseli. Amboseli's set piece is the swamp and lake-bed birding and the flamingos that come when Lake Amboseli floods. Species-by-species odds for each park are on our wildlife page and the Tsavo wildlife page.

Getting there, and how crowded each park feels

From Nairobi both are a morning's drive. Amboseli is 204 km via Emali to Iremito Gate or 220 km via Namanga to Meshanani Gate, 4 to 5 hours with gravel at the end. Tsavo is easier: Mtito Andei, on the highway between the two parks, is 233 km and about 3 hours from Nairobi, and Mombasa to Tsavo East's Bachuma Gate is 110 km, about an hour and a half. Tsavo also has the train, the Madaraka Express to Voi from KSh 440 in economy, which Amboseli cannot match. By air the balance tips back: Amboseli has two daily scheduled flights from Wilson, Tsavo West one and Tsavo East none. The Tsavo getting there page has the train times that work.

Crowds are where the size difference bites. KNBS counted 295,900 visitors to Amboseli in 2025 and 265,800 to Tsavo East, a park 35 times larger. In Amboseli, KWS's own plan says Observation Hill draws at least 80 per cent of visitors, and its zoning puts the swamps and Ol Tukai in the high-use zone, with the west, north and east of the park left as low-use. Tsavo East has its own rush, the Mombasa day-trip vans that come in through Bachuma from mid-morning, but in a park that size you often get a sighting to yourself.

Where you sleep in each park

Amboseli has few beds inside the boundary. Our lodge guide lists 31 places to stay, and only 10 are inside the park: Ol Tukai Lodge, Amboseli Serena, Soroi Amboseli, Kibo Villa, five KWS self-catering units and one KWS public campsite. Most of the rest are camps on the strip outside Kimana Gate, plus conservancy camps such as Tortilis on the western edge, Porini in Selenkay from $585 and Angama in Kimana Sanctuary at $1,850 per person a night in 2026.

Tsavo has more beds in more places: the Tsavo lodge guide lists 37, with 25 inside the two parks, from Ndololo campsite at $20 to Satao Camp from $135 and Kilaguni Serena from $212 per room, plus KWS houses at Kamboyo and Goss. The value sits around Voi Gate. ol Donyo Lodge in the Chyulu Hills, from $1,590 per person, appears in both guides because it sits between the two parks.

The verdict: Amboseli or Tsavo?

Neither park is better in general. Sort yourself with the list below, and if you have five nights or more, stop choosing and do both.

  • Choose Amboseli if elephants are the point: about 2,000 known individuals on open swamps, close to the roads.
  • Choose Amboseli for Kilimanjaro: the mountain stands over the park, best on clear mornings from August to October.
  • Choose Amboseli for a short trip from Nairobi or a fly-in: two daily flights from Wilson, and the whole park is an easy drive from the lodges at Ol Tukai.
  • Choose Amboseli if lions matter on a two-night stay: they are likely here and only a chance in Tsavo.
  • Choose Tsavo if you want space: about 22,000 km² against 392, where a sighting is often yours alone.
  • Choose Tsavo on a budget: $80 a day against $90, campsites at $20 against $30, and the cheapest published lodge rate is $95 per person at Voi Wildlife Lodge against $160 at Sungura Safari Camp.
  • Choose Tsavo if you come by train or from the coast: the Madaraka Express stops at Voi, and Bachuma Gate is 110 km from Mombasa.
  • Choose Tsavo for red elephants, Mzima Springs, the lava country and more than 600 bird species in Tsavo West.
  • Choose Tsavo if you want to walk: KWS sells walking safaris in Tsavo East and Tsavo West, while in Amboseli you leave the vehicle only at Observation Hill.

How to combine Amboseli and Tsavo in one trip

The two parks link through Amboseli's Kimana Gate and Tsavo West's Chyulu Gate, 74 km apart by road, 2 to 2.5 hours. The Tsavo guide measures the drive from Ol Tukai, in the middle of Amboseli, to Chyulu Gate at 94 km of corrugated murram and recommends a 4x4. Fill up in Kimana on the way out, because there is no fuel inside either park.

Buy the package that matches your route: $150 per non-resident adult for Tsavo West plus Amboseli, or $215 for all three parks, against $170 and $250 bought separately. KWS does not spell out how the 24-hour rule works inside a package, so plan each crossing as an exit from one park and an entry to the next on the same day, and ask KWS when you pay. If Tsavo East is on the route too, decide between the two halves with the Tsavo guide's Tsavo East or Tsavo West comparison.

  • Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli via Emali and Iremito Gate, 204 km, 4 to 5 hours.
  • Days 1 to 3: two nights in Amboseli; dawn drives for the mountain, the swamps by day.
  • Day 3: out through Kimana Gate, fuel in Kimana, then 74 km to Chyulu Gate and into Tsavo West, 2 to 2.5 hours.
  • Days 3 to 5: two nights in Tsavo West around Mzima Springs and the Chyulu side.
  • Day 5: back to Nairobi from Mtito Andei (233 km), or on to Tsavo East through Maktau Gate and 59 km of tarmac to Voi, then out to Mombasa through Bachuma (110 km) or by train from Voi.
