Month by month

Amboseli in March

March is the hinge of Amboseli's year. The first fortnight is often still hot and dry, the long rains tend to break during the month, and Easter brings a short burst of peak prices before the lodges drop to their cheapest season on 1 April.

If you only want the answer

March starts hot and dry, with 28.3°C days, and turns wet as the long rains arrive, about 38 mm on average. Come in the first half if you can. It is the last month of mid and high season at the lodges; the cheapest rates of the year start on 1 April.

Amboseli weather in March: the long rains break

The climate normals give March 28.3°C in the afternoon and 18.6°C at night, the warmest nights of the year alongside April, with about 38 mm of rain, an approximate figure scaled to the station's measured annual mean. The baboon project's records put the start of the long wet season in March, and the station's temperatures peak in February and March before the rain cools things down.

The rains do not arrive on a fixed date, so the first half of the month is the safer half for game drives, and the second half is when you should start to expect muddy tracks.

Easter, and the last of the high season

On its 2026 card Ol Tukai Lodge, inside the park, charges peak rates over Easter and high season, $580 per double room on full board, for the rest of March; Easter 2027 falls on 28 March. Tortilis Camp's 2026 mid season, $491 per person sharing, runs until 31 March, and so do Tawi Lodge's bands.

Safarilink's high season also ends on 31 March. From 1 April its afternoon flight from Wilson stops for the low season and only the 07:15 departure runs, so a late-March arrival is the last scheduled afternoon connection until July.

First calves, first dispersal, first snow

Elephant births start to climb in March, the beginning of a peak that runs to June. As the rain spreads water across the basin, the plains herds begin to leave the swamps for the group ranches around the park, and lions normally follow them out in the wet season.

On Kilimanjaro, Expert Africa notes that the heaviest snow falls between March and May. Modelled cloud data still give about one clear summit in four at dawn in March, the last month with reasonable odds before the cloudy weeks of April and May.
