Month by month
Amboseli in July
July is Amboseli at its coolest and close to its driest. High season starts at every lodge, the swamps fill with animals from the drying plains, and Kilimanjaro shows itself on more mornings than at any time since March.
If you only want the answer
July brings about 6 mm of rain, the year's coolest days at 24.9°C and coldest nights at 15.1°C. Game viewing is excellent as the herds pack onto the swamps. Every lodge that publishes its seasons is at high or peak rates from 1 July, so book early.
Amboseli weather in July: the coolest month
July averages 24.9°C in the afternoon and 15.1°C at night, the lowest figures of the year, with about 6 mm of rain, an approximate figure scaled to the station's measured annual mean. The baboon project's records place the year's lowest temperatures in the long dry season from June to August, and rain almost never falls in it.
At 15°C before sunrise an open safari vehicle feels cold. Bring a fleece and a hat for the dawn drive and expect to shed them by mid-morning.
High season starts everywhere
On 1 July Tortilis Camp moves to its high-season rate of $715 per person sharing on its 2026 card, Tawi Lodge's bands move to peak, and Ol Tukai Lodge has been at peak since June, at $650 per double room on full board. Porini Amboseli Camp rises to $855 per person sharing, its rate until the end of October.
Safarilink's high season returns on 1 July, bringing back its second daily flight from Wilson at 14:00 alongside the 07:15. Park fees stay at $90 per non-resident adult per 24 hours, so in this season the lodge, not the park, is what drives the price of your trip.
The swamps fill up, and so does the hill
With no rain falling, the spring-fed swamps become the centre of the park's life. KWS's own visitor study found that 70 per cent of viewing time in the park goes on lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and Observation Hill, and the swamp circuits are zoned as the park's high-use area. The western sector around Kitirua and the dry lake bed, and the north and east, are zoned for low use and see fewer vehicles.
Kilimanjaro's odds keep improving. On modelled cloud data a little over one July morning in four shows a clear summit at dawn, against one in ten in April, and August and September do better still.
